Each film coated tablet contains:

 Metformin Hydrochloride BP 500 mg

Metformin is an oral anti-diabetic drug in the biguanide class. It is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, in particular, in overweight and obese people and those with normal kidney function.

Non-insulin dependent diabetes (type 2), when diet has failed and especially if the patient is obese. Biomet can be given alone or as an adjunct to diet or can be administered in combination with a sulphonylurea.

Biomet can also be used for the management of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) symptoms.

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of metformin must be individualized on the basis of both effectiveness and tolerance, while not exceeding the maximum recommended daily dose of 2500 mg. Metformin should be given in divided doses with meals and should be started at a low dose, with gradual dose escalation, both to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and to permit identification of the minimum dose required for adequate glycemic control of the patient.

The usual starting dose of Biomet 500 mg tablets is one tablet b.i.d., given with the morning and evening meals. Dosage increases should be made in increments of one tablet every week, given in divided doses, up to a maximum of 2500 mg per day.

In PCOS, 1.5 to 2.5 g/day in divided doses for 8-12 weeks (can also be used throughout pregnancy in cases of PCOS with pregnancy).

Acidemia, acute myocardial infarction, breast-feeding, cardiogenic shock, diabetic ketoacidosis, hepatic disease, hypoxia, lactic acidosis/metabolic acidosis, renal failure, sepsis, surgery, radiographic contrast administration.

Do not use Biomet in patients who have known metformin hypersensitivity.
